The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), a body made up of commonwealth Parliamentarians has suspended Sierra Leone Parliament for failing to fulfil its financial obligations towards the lawmaker's association.
Sierra Leone is part of the Commonwealth countries. Hence, the CPA was founded to develop, promote and support parliamentarians and their staff to identify benchmarks of good governance and to implement the enduring values of the Commonwealth.
The implication of the suspension is that Sierra Leone will not participate in the forthcoming Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference scheduled for September 22 - 29 at the Commonwealth Resort Hotel in the upscale Kampala suburb of Munyonyo.
While lamenting at the situation, the Speaker of the Sierra Leone Parliament, Dr. Abass Bundu said the suspension was as a result of the county failing to pay annual subscription fee of the association.
"This news of the suspension from the Speaker is not good for the image of the country", Honorable Ibrahim Tawa Conteh, lawmaker representing Constituency 132 said while emphasizing the need for the country to be part of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
In his own remarks, the acting opposition leader of the Parliament, Honorable Ibrahim Kargbo of the All People’s Congress (APC) party, said that there is something urgent that needs to be done to address the issue.
